Have you ever rejected something new because you figure it can’t possibly work as well as the original? We’ve all done that at one time or another. Sometimes, we don’t trust the new technology; in other cases, we just feel a strong attachment to the original.
Despite our bias against the new version, it may work as well as the original. This is the case with braces. Although traditional metal braces are still the preferred choice for many patients, newer versions also work very well. Clear braces are an example of this. Thanks to modern technology, they are far less visible than traditional metal braces, but they are equally effective.
It is important to note that every case is different. The type of braces that will work best for you will depend on your individual circumstances. At Owl Orthodontics, we do an exam during your initial appointment and, if braces are necessary, we make a recommendation about the best type of braces based on that exam. It’s good for patients and their families to keep an open mind about all types of braces, including traditional metal braces and newer versions. We’re always happy to answer any questions you may have, but we provide the following as a beginner’s guide to clear braces.
- Ceramic braces – just as metal braces involve attaching a bracket to each tooth, ceramic braces involve attaching a ceramic composite material to each tooth. A wire is then attached to the material, just as a wire is attached to the brackets of traditional metal braces.
- Invisalign – this option is different from traditional braces. With Invisalign, we take an impression of the teeth and develop a series of aligning trays, which are designed to gradually shift the teeth until they are optimally aligned.
- InVu – with color-matching technology, this option allows patients to conceal the fact that they’re straightening their teeth. In addition, InVu braces are designed for maximum comfort; this is another factor in their popularity.
- Damon Clear is part of the innovative Damon System, which combines tieless brackets and high technology archwires that are clinically proven to move teeth fast and comfortably with spectacular smile and facial results.
Do clear braces really work? The short answer is yes, they do. The better question, though, is whether clear braces will really work for you. The answer to that question is more complex: it depends. We’ll help you every step of the way. After we do your exam, we’ll explain your options and help you decide which one is best for you. In some cases, one option is clearly the best choice. In other cases, different types of braces may work equally well. We’ll provide you with all the information you need, as well as our guidance, to help you make the decision that’s best for you.
Many adults prefer clear braces because they fear that traditional metal braces will make them seem too young. In addition, many adults prefer to be discreet about their orthodontic work. We understand that and we do our best to accommodate these and other preferences. Keep in mind that no matter what type of braces you’re interested in, you’re never too old for braces. Straighter teeth function better; that’s a good thing at any age. Contact us with any specific questions or to schedule a free consultation.
